As well as editing and developing the group's several websites and being instrumental in dragging Dazed into the new millenium over the past couple of years, she is currently working on the launch of a new magazine: Intersection.

The Folks of Magma Books

A new breed of bookshop.
What is a bookshop? Waterstones, Borders, Amazon.com? Is cramming with mountains of discounted paperbacks the only way? The traditional concept of the bookshop has been stretched as far as it could go. Now it can't get any bigger. It is about to burst. It is about to change, to evolve.

And this is what MAGMA is about. They believe that their new shop in Earlham street is the most intensely visual space you will ever come across. Walking into MAGMA is like walking into a thermometer. It will immediately tell you "where things are at" at that precise moment in time and space.

Their hope is that when people walk into this space they will realise something, something will have changed in the way they perceive things.

MAGMA is not just a place that sells books, magazines, CD-ROMS, DVDs, brochures... MAGMA is a place where you can find the best selection and the highest concentration of creative material.

All the five sites captioned below should be recognized as master pieces because all of them demonstrate a perfect design in the online media.

Aleart www.aleart.net

Cisma www.cisma.com.br

Demo-Design www.demo-design.com

Lessrain www.lessrain.co.uk
Lessrain especially appeals to me, in particular, its neatness and cleanness. And also, the unique style contributed by the "abnormal and surprise" way to handle the backdrop picture make it more than a beautiful artwork and stand out from others.

Submethod www.submethod.com

It was a pleasure to view these sites. I thank and congratulate everyone who have made such wonderful work.

Dazed & Confused are providing their nominated sites with the following: Free subscription to Dazed & Confused magazine for the year, and a selection of Vision On books.

1. Lessrain www.lessrain.co.uk
Stylish site that indicates strong range. Games are laced with gentle humour, they're seriously good but don't take themselves too seriously. A long time fan of the navigational fish, I'm looking forward to seeing even more flesh on its bones.

2. Submethod www.submethod.com
Effortlessly subtle and sophisticated, a celestial sight of the future. A site that leaves room for its refined, distinctive and flamboyant visual content.

3. Supershapes www.supershapes.com
A superb reflection on identity and one's surroundings, surprising, beautiful, serene images that twist ideas on bland middle-american surburbia.

4. Cisma www.cisma.com.br
A curious, slick and clean modular site showcases a selection of linedrawing graphics and animations, with graphic depictions of the artist's theories on life and sex. And more fish action.

5. Gmunk www.gmunk.com
A sleek, minimal showcase for a selection of witty shorts & animations.

Magma Books are providing their nominated sites with the following: £50 worth of books.

1. Supershapes www.supershapes.com

2. Module8 www.module8.com

3. Submethod www.submethod.com

4. dform(one)shiftfunc www.dform1shiftfunc.net

5. Hungry for Design www.hungryfordesign.com

dform(one)shiftfunc www.dform1shiftfunc.net
I doubt I'll be the only one to pick this. The interface takes a style that has been around for a while and gives it a completely over the top twist. You won't find another site in Reboot that you want to explore more. Oh, yeah, and kudos to the lads for letting me play Breakout while their 2MB file loads in the background. For that alone they'd make my list, though I would like a right and left arrow key.

Hungry for Design www.hungryfordesign.com
I doubt a lot of people will vote for this because it's such a pain to navigate, but I've picked it because it's doing what others aren't: making flat, beautiful images. I guess when I look at personal work, I try to find things I identify with. Clearly Costa is out of his mind, and that helps him immensely in my book.

Lessrain www.lessrain.co.uk
This is a really beautiful site, with its typography, understated movement, and interesting navigation. It's classic without being dull, and different without being a pain to get through. I doubted I'd pick a site that was so clearly commercial, but after the controversy, I thought, what the hell.

The May 1st Reboot participant pages www.threeoh.com/may1/2001/participants.php
This is the most intriguing site that came out of the whole thing as far as I'm concerned. My advice is to check out a bunch of these, and don't get too hung up on how everything looks. Some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet are lousy designers.

Volumeone www.volumeone.com
It's getting fashionable to forget about Matt Owens these days. But I didn't see a lot of sites (not that I looked at all of them) that went beyond a single idea. Volume One is remarkable for its flexibility in incorporating new styles and ideas, and a lot of thought went into it, as usual.

Cisma www.cisma.com.br
Hands down my favorite. I really feel transported into another world, one attached with a common, but split history from our own. The work feels somewhat dangerous but alluring.

Noscope www.noscope.com
A simple, single purpose site, and a nice interface to downloading desktops. The motion and design had a pleasant, although perhaps approaching a soft jazz feel.

Plasticbag www.plasticbag.de
Very challenging site, both visually and technically. It feels massive and bizzare and somewhat fragile too.

Reptilia www.rept.com
I really like the catholic overtones of this piece. Religion shows itself so little in web design yet it remains a major factor in our world and culture.

Submethod www.submethod.com
The combination of vector/polygon works and sound creates a great experience.

Aleart www.aleart.net
Mysterious, emotional and interesting. The somewhat humourous soundscape enhanced the experience, and we couldn't stop laughing.

dform(one)shiftfunc www.dform1shiftfunc.net
An immersive interface that, if slightly difficult at first, is particularly effective as the experience unfolds. Great motion and a cinematic sense of timing, allied with a wonderful sense of colour and sharp typography.

Lance Aaron www.lanceaaron.com
An endearingly simple collection of sketches that seemed to be a pleasing relief from the norm within the community, and a pleasant surprise creatively.

Presstube www.presstube.com
Beautiful and touchingly personal. Simply great creativity, and a site that boasts some very inspiring narrative experiences.

Ximera Labs www.ximeralabs.com
Very crisp graphics, great interactive design and a good sense of diversity and simplicity. This site had particularly interesting compositions.
